A missing tooth doesn’t stay a “small” problem for long. It changes how you chew, how you speak, sometimes even how you smile in photos without quite realizing why. Patients often come to us months, sometimes years after losing a tooth, having simply gotten used to working around the gap. The good news: you don’t have to.
What a Dental Implant Actually Is
Think of it as replacing the whole tooth, not just the visible part. A small titanium post is placed into the jawbone where the root used to be. Over time, it fuses with the bone, much the way a natural root would, and becomes the foundation for a custom-made crown on top. The result looks, feels, and functions like the tooth that used to be there.
That’s the real difference between implants and older solutions like bridges or dentures: implants replace the root, not just the crown.
Why the Root Matters
When a tooth is lost and nothing replaces the root, the jawbone underneath starts to shrink over time, a process called bone resorption. This is why people who’ve been missing teeth for years sometimes notice their face shape subtly changing, or nearby teeth shifting into the gap. An implant preserves the bone structure by giving it something to hold onto, the same job the natural root used to do.
What Makes a Good Candidate
Most healthy adults with adequate jawbone are reasonable candidates, but it genuinely varies person to person. Things we consider:
- Overall gum and bone health
- Whether bone grafting might be needed first
- Existing conditions like uncontrolled diabetes or smoking habits, which can affect healing
- How many teeth need replacing, and where
None of this is a checklist you need to figure out yourself, it’s exactly what a consultation and evaluation are for.
The Process, Roughly
- Evaluation – X-rays and an exam to assess bone and gum health
- Implant placement – the titanium post is placed into the jawbone under local anesthesia
- Healing period – usually a few months, while the implant integrates with the bone
- Crown placement – a custom-fitted crown is attached, matched to your natural teeth
It’s a longer timeline than a filling or a crown, admittedly, but it’s also meant to be a long-term, sometimes lifetime, solution when cared for properly.
Common Questions We Hear
Does it hurt? Placement is done under local anesthesia, and most patients describe the recovery as similar to a tooth extraction, some soreness, manageable with normal aftercare.
How long do implants last? With good oral hygiene and regular checkups, an implant can function well for many years, often decades.
Is it just cosmetic? Not really. Beyond the smile, implants restore proper chewing function and prevent the bone loss and bite shifting that come with leaving a gap untreated.
If You’ve Been Putting It Off
